Kite Fishing and Live Baiting
Fishing off the Treasure Coast of South Florida is extremely exciting on its own, but when you layer on the effective use of live bait, which you caught the morning of the trip, it can quickly turn EPIC. During a typical Stuart, Florida fishing charter on the Bone Shaker, we spend some time in the morning catching live bait which is then used for multiple applications throughout the day. Live bait is used as pitch baits to free swimming fish, and while fighting a fish already or the bait is already being used to pitch to floating debris for Dolphin, Wahoo, and Sailfish. However, the primary use of our acquired bait is for bottom fishing for Snapper, Grouper, Cobia, and Amberjack. Another option is to fish a complete spread of live bait at one time in order to target pelagic fish like Mahi, Wahoo, King Mackerel, Blackfin Tuna and Sailfish.
One method we use while live baiting is to fish baits out of our outriggers and use a bait down on a break-away lead. We use the boat to slowly troll the baits over effective bottom structure, both natural and artificial. When live bait is plentiful, we live chum while slow trolling which creates a feeding frenzy behind and around the boat. Live baiting slows things down for the novice angler, allowing you to get a feel for hooking your own fish and also making the bite extremely visible.
The second method which is equally, if not more, effective is called Kite fishing. Kite fishing is just what it sounds like; we fly 1 or 2 kites from the boat and deploy live baits which are suspended on the surface of the water by the kite and its release clips. Typically 2-3 baits are fished per kite to maximize opportunity. Since the baits are suspended at the surface at all times, the bites are exhilarating. Kite fishing is the most effective presentation for a live bait. Since Kite fishing is done mostly at the mercy of the current and drift of the water, we will normally look for a hard condition such as a big temperature break, color change or current edge upon which to set up. Trolling ballyhoo then switching to kite fishing when a body of fish is located is also a very effective way to locate fish.
